A megaslump at Batagaika, in northern Yakutia, exposes a remarkable stratigraphic sequence of permafrost deposits ~50–80 m thick. To determine their potential for answering key questions about Quaternary environmental and climatic change in northeast Siberia, we carried out a reconnaissance study of their cryostratigraphy and paleoecology, supported by four rangefinder 14C ages. The sequence includes two ice complexes separated by a unit of fine sand containing narrow syngenetic ice wedges and multiple paleosols. Overall, the sequence developed as permafrost grew syngenetically through an eolian sand sheet aggrading on a hillslope. Wood remains occur in two forest beds, each associated with a reddened weathering horizon. The lower bed contains high amounts of Larix pollen (>20%), plus small amounts of Picea and Pinus pumila, and is attributed to interglacial conditions. Pollen from the overlying sequence is dominated by herbaceous taxa (~70%–80%) attributed to an open tundra landscape during interstadial climatic conditions. Of three hypothetical age schemes considered, we tentatively attribute much of the Batagaika sequence to Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 3. The upper and lower forest beds may represent a mid–MIS 3 optimum and MIS 5, respectively, although we cannot discount alternative attributions to MIS 5 and 7.

The serotoninergic system as a target for add-on treatment seems to be a promising approach in patients with schizophrenia.
ObjectiveTo clarify if selective 5HT-6 antagonist AVN-211 (CD-008-0173) adds clinical and cognitive effects to stable antipsychotic treatment.
MethodsA randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, add-on, 4r-week trial in 47 schizophrenia patients (21 patients receiving study drug and 26 receiving placebo) who were stabilized on antipsychotic medication was performed. Seventeen patients from the study drug group and 25 patients from the placebo group completed the trial. Treatment effects were measured using clinical rating scales and attention tests.
ResultsWith no differences at baseline, there was a significant difference between the groups in Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) positive subscale score (p = 0.058) in favor of patients in the treatment group at the endpoint. The PANSS positive subscore (p = 0.0068) and Clinical Global Impression–Severity (CGI-S) (p = 0.048) score significantly changed only in the treatment group. Only in the placebo group were significant changes in Calgary Depression Rating Scale (CDRS) total score registered. The indices of attention tests at endpoint did not show differences between the groups, with the exception of the scope of change in the results of the subtest VIII of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), which showed difference between the groups (p = 0.02) and was significantly larger in the treatment group. Only inside the study drug group, significant changes in selectivity and continuous attention were observed regarding total correct responses (p = 0.0038) and reaction time (p = 0.058) in the Continuous Attention Task (CAT) test.
ConclusionSelective 5HT6 antagonist AVN-211 (CD-008-0173) added antipsychotic and some procognitive (attention) effects to antipsychotic medication.

Thermal stability of the luminescent properties of CdSe and CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) in polymer films of gelatin and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is studied. Thermal annealing of the films at the air ambience at 100 °C is found to result in two effects in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra: (i) an enhancement of the PL intensity and (ii) a red spectral shift of the PL bands. The first effect is observed in both QDs-gelatin and QDs-PVA composites, while the second one - in the QDs-gelatin only. The passivation of CdSe QDs with ZnS shell reduces the effects. The enhancement of the PL intensity is supposed to be due to the decrease of nonradiative defect density. The red shift is explained by dissociation of coordination bonds between surface Cd atoms and amino-groups of gelatin. This dissociation decreases the PL intensity too. This effect competes with the effect of PL enhancement and is supposed to be responsible for non-monotonous dependence of the PL intensity versus annealing time in the QDs-gelatin composite.

The present work is concerned with Er-doped oxidized porous silicon (PS). The characteristic feature of the work is that PS doping has been realized by an electrochemical procedure followed by a high temperature treatment. 5-μm thick PS layers were formed on p-type Si of 0.3-Ohm-cm resistivity. Er incorporation was performed by a cathodic polarization of PS in a 0.1 M Er(NO3)3 aqueous solution. A high temperature treatment in an oxidizing ambient at 500-1000°C was utilized to provide either partial or total oxidation of PS:Er layers. X-ray microanalysis was used to study chemical composition of the samples. Photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra were investigated. After the partial oxidation (in the temperature range of 600-800°C), weak Er3+-related PL at 1.53 ptm was observed. A high temperature anneal in Ar atmosphere at the temperature of 1100°C caused a significant increase in the Er3+-related PL intensity. Resonant features were observed in PLE spectra of fully oxidized PS. Five peaks at 381, 492, 523, 654 and 980 nm were revealed. The strongest excitation occurred at 381 and 523 nm. The excitation of different Er3+ energy levels, cross-relaxation interactions and emission due to the 4I13/2→4I15/2 transitions were considered. Application of the Er-doped oxidized PS for integrated optical waveguides is presented.

Infrared photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) from erbium-doped porous silicon (PSi) structures are studied. The PL and EL from the Er-doped PSi structures and the absence of silicon band edge recombination, point defect, and dislocation luminescence bands suggest that the Er-complex centers are the most efficient recombination sites. PSi multilayers with very high reflectivity (R ≥ 90%) in the 1.5 gim range have been incorporated in the structures resulting in a PL enhancement of over 100%. Stable and intense EL is obtained from the Er-doped structures. The EL spectrum is similar to that of the PL, but shifted towards higher energy. The unexpected shift in emission opens up the possibility for erbium related luminescence to encompass a larger part of the optimal wavelength window for fiber optic communications.

Porous silicon (PSi) was doped by Er using electromigration from a solution and converted to Er-doped silicon-rich silicon oxide (SRSO:Er) by partial thermal oxidation at 600–950°C following densification at 1100°C in an inert atmosphere. Room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) at ∼1.5 μm is intense and decreases by less than 20% from 12 K to 300 K. The PL spectrum of SRSO:Er reveals no luminescence bands related to Si-bandedgerecombination, point defects or dislocations, and shows that the Er3+ centers are the most efficient radiative recombination centers. A light-emitting diode (LED) with an active layer made of SRSO:Er was manufactured using a pre-oxidation cleaning step to increase the quality of the interface between SRSO:Er and the top electrode. Room temperature electroluminescence at ∼1.5 μm was demonstrated.

We demonstrate current induced visible light emission from Schottky junctions between aluminium electrodes and porous silicon formed by electrochemical etching of degenerate n+ -type silicon. HF concentration and anodizing current were chosen to yield preparation conditions in the transition region between electropolishing and porous silicon formation regimes. The light emitting diodes were formed by magnetron sputtering of aluminum on the porous silicon surface. Visible electroluminescence (EL) was recorded when dc or ac voltages larger than 4 V were applied between the aluminium electrodes. The visible EL appears in the dark, at the edge of the electrodes at a reverse bias of 5-6 V. The intensity of emitted light increases with applied voltage; at applied bias higher than 7 V the light emitted was observable by the naked eye at normal daylight. Compared to forward bias solid state contact porous silicon devices, the structure has an increased stability (after 100 hours of continuous operation under a 7 V reverse bias, no appreciable modification was observed in emission intensity). The main features of this electroluminescence are very similar to the ones observed under avalanche breakdown of silicon p-n junctions.

The results of the x-ray spectral investigations of CdxHg1-xTe/GaAs thin films conducted with the help of “Camebax - microbeam” electron microprobe are presented. It is shown that the sensitivity of the microprobe combined with the mathematical processing based on the chemometric approaches Is sufficient to reveal the effects of the chemical bond on x-ray spectra.
